Freedom Child educates readers about India’s current corruption, poverty, caste system, and bondage system.  A heartbreaking tale of two courageous girls trapped in a malevolent maze of modern day slavery in India, Freedom Child will open your eyes to the horrors of slavery that are still occurring in our so-called “modern” society. This is a must-read for anyone interested in global politics and human rights.

Freedom Lost unfolds as two brothers journey home to freedom. Entrapped in debt bondage—a common form of modern slavery in India—they encounter new challenges and a form of discrimination they never faced before. The caste system is alive and brutal in India's rural isolation. Amit and Anil must fight for their dignity, as they find their way back home.

Freedom Lost is compiled of the many interviews with the brave men and women I met during my trip to Karnataka, India in 2013.

“It ought to concern every person, because it’s a debasement of our common humanity. It ought to concern every community, because it tears at the social fabric. It ought to concern every business, because it distorts markets. It ought to concern every nation, because it endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime. I’m talking about the injustice, the outrage, of human trafficking, which must be called by its true name—modern slavery.”

— President Barack Obama, September 25, 2012

Modern Slavery Statistics

  • There are approximately 21-36 million slaves in the world today and about 14 million of them are in India alone.

  • Approximately 9 million are children.

  • There are approximately 60,000 in the US.

  • 78% are labor victims and 22% are sex slavery victims. 55% are women and girls.

  • There are more humans enslaved today than the entire transatlantic slave trade

  • Human Trafficking makes $150.2 billion in illicit profits each year, more than Apple, Microsoft, and Exxon combined

  • Sexual exploitation makes up 66% of the profits

  • In India, it is more likely to be struck by lightning than be charged for the crime of trafficking a human being

The issue of slavery transcends the physical or monetary restraints that lock people into inhumane conditions. During my research, I learned how issues of poverty, caste, lack of education, and even religion can tear the very fabric of human dignity and identity. In order to find a sustainable solution to slave labor, solutions must address these issues.

The multifaceted nature of human trafficking in India required me to research the economic, social, and political aspects of this topic, in addition to the history and evolution of slavery. The history is a critical component, as slavery has been engrained into the fabric of the Indian economy and social structure since ancient times. With such deep roots and intricate causes, there is no straightforward solution.
